Sanchi - The Buddhist vihara at Sanchi, renowned for the Great Stupa, is located in Sanchi Town of Madhya Pradesh. The Great Stupa is the oldest stone structure in India, built in the 3rd century BCE by Emperor Ashoka the Great. Initially, it was a simple hemispherical brick structure that housed the relics of Buddha. The stupa was crowned with a chatra, a parasol-like structure symbolizing high rank, designed to honour and protect the relics. Sanchi’s historical and spiritual significance makes it a key destination for those interested in India’s rich Buddhist heritage.
